1. wear approved eye protection at all times
10. assemble apparatus carefully
2. wear sensible clothing and tie back long hair
11. avoid touching hot objects
3. avoid absorbing chemicals by
  • using great care in detecting odors
  • never putting anything into your mouth
  • washing skin and clothing that contact chemicals
  • 12. use extreme caution when inserting glass tubing into stoppers
    4. do not attempt any unauthorized experiments
    13. keep your desk environment and the laboratory clean
    5. know where safety equipment is and how to use it
    14. handle chemicals with caution by
  • reading labels carefully
  • using only the amount required
  • leaving chemicals in their proper places
  • cleaning up all spills immediately with supervision
  • labeling all containers to identify their contents
  • 6. never work alone
    15. thoroughly wash hands and face at the end of each laboratory period
    7. use the fume hood when necessary, or so directed
    16. take immediate action as needed in response to burns,
    splattered chemicals, fire or injuries
    8. dispose of waste and excess materials
    according to instructions
    17. report all accidents and injuries, no matter how minor, to your
    laboratory instructor
    9. use only equipment that is in good condition
