        B. Timbuktu Sessions

Timbuktu (or Tombouctou) in Mali , is the legendary city founded as a commercial center in West Africa nine hundred years ago. Dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, ancient manuscripts cover every aspect of human endeavor and are indicative of the high level of civilization attained by West Africans during the Middle Ages. It light of this history, and with determination to continue in this spirit, we meet for 2 hours every Thursday to study and learn as a group. In these study sessions, we help out with home works, assignments, and exam preparations. If you will like to study with us please joins us:

Location: Group Study Room 1, Second Floor, Science & Engineering Library

Date: Every Thursday

Time: 7-9pm

II. Future Activities

A. Book and Computer Drives

Every year ASEAS organizes book and computer drives for donation to needy schools in Africa . The first book drive was a huge success. Donations poured in from far and near. In total, more than 3000 science and engineering texts were collected during the drive.

The book drive would not have been a success without the tremendous support received from donors and other organizations. We especially thank the institutions and individuals below:

•  Books For Africa (www.booksforafrica.org) (For transportation and shipping of books to Africa )

•  Tau Beta Pi (http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/Clubs/taubetap/) ( The TBP book drive brought in more than half of the donations)

•  The Office of Educational Programs ( http://www.bnl.gov/scied/programs/suli/index.html ) of the Brookhaven National Laboratory

•  Godlind Johnson, Head, Science & Engineering Library, Stony Brook University

•  Bob Lobou, Gifts Librarian, Melville Library, Stony Brook University

•  Prof. Fu-Pen Chiang, Chair, Mechanical Engineering Department, Stony Brook University

B. Scholarship Programs

A recent study has shown that people of color rarely apply and get educational scholarships. At ASEAS we are determined to change this history, as we effectively and constantly inform our members of new and available scholarships. Some of the commonly overlooked scholarships are listed below with their contact information.

• Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI), established by the U.S. Department of Energy.
