2006 Roth Regatta - The Race

It was a beautiful day and it was the day of reckoning. We were competing in the famous "Roth Race" against the most ruthless and competitive group of cardboard boat racers ever put together. We were confident of our paddling skill and on the fine construction of our ship, the “S.S Winging It”. The ship was a superb example of cardboard workmanship. It was constructed on the naval yards of the CTSR also known as the “High-Bay” by a team of senior designers. It was as tough as they could make it and it was built to last.

The “Winging It” had a seasoned crew with a "no holds barred" attitude:

Captain (Jose Mawyin)
Number 1 (Prof. Andrew Gouldstone)
Mr. Tim (Timothy Lee)
Councilor Silva (Maricris Silva)

The race was going to start. The landcrew and rowers were ready in their positions.

Captain: Today is the day folks. The department expects the outmost effort from all of us.
Mr. Tim: But I’m going to fall overboard.
Number 1: Nonsense Mr. Tim. You will do your best as usual.
Captain (whispering to Number 1): If need be, enforce discipline using the paddle to whack them in the head.

After a good start, we notice our ship veering to the right.

Councilor Silva: Captain, the Mallard is approaching from starboard.
Captain: What are their intentions Councilor Silva?
Councilor Silva: Their minds are hard to read and full of images of yellow ducks and “Quack” sounds but they are up to no good.

The Mallard was known across the seven seas. It was a monstrous construct of cardboard and yellow paint. Its crew were disciples of the Cult of the Duck, a ruthless mob of duck frenzied pirates. Its huge bulk was pulling us in and we had to do something.

Mr. Tim: We should ram them and then pull out full steam to the left!.
Captain: Make it so Number 1.
Number 1: Ramming speed Mr. Tim!!. Prepare for boarding, you never know what these Duck Cultists may try.

The ramming maneuver worked. After hand to hand combat with the Duck minions, we pulled ahead from its bulk. We thought that we had achieved victory. However, a sneaky two-person boat has pulled ahead of us during our battle with the Mallard.

Everyone (sad faces): We should have won that race.
Number 1: The Mallard delayed us. Next year we should build an Armada, defeat the Mallard and its Duck minions and rule the “Roth Race”
Captain: You are right Number 1. We will see you next year Mallard.

2006 Roth Regatta - Boat Construction

One of the highlights in the series of events sponsored by the Materials Science Club and ASM-LI Student Chapter is this years Roth Regatta. The graduate and undergraduate students have joined together to build a cardboard boat for the competition. With the support of Prof. Michael Dudley and Dr. Jim Quinn from our department, we were able to get the materials to construct a "state of the art" cardboard boat.

The boat is being constructed in the Hi Bay space of the Thermal Spray group. The involvement of the student has been incredible. Apart from being a joint activity between the grad and undergrad students, we hope it will be memory worth remembering for the outgoing senior ESG students.

We hope to see many students from our depatment cheering during the maiden voyage of the "S.S. Winging It" this Friday April 28th.

BBQ 2006 Spring Fest

Saturday April 15 we had our previously announced BBQ at Sunken Meadow Park. Many students attended our event and some of them brough food that was eagerly shared with the rest of the attendees. Xiaoting, Lorena and Prashant brought some regional delicacies apart from the burgers and hot-dogs that we brought as default.

Apart from the BBQ we enjoyed the S'mores made on-site by Debby. Those were quite delicious and gooey. A few of us shared on the grilling and in no time we were all full.

After eating we went for a stroll on the beach and a few of us joined on a little game of sand soccer. The final score was 3 vs 3.

Thank you to all those who were able to join us and the committee members that made this event a reality.

End of Year Extravaganza: Student Potluck and Ping Ping Tournament

The 22nd of this month we held the annual end of year festivities. Some of the events included the student run potluck where we had many delicacies prepared by our grad chefs. The food was good and it was finished early. After eating, we held the annual Materials Science Oscar Awards. Congratulations to the winners on the most extreme categories. :)

We wanted to conclude the holiday celebrations with a ping pong tournament using the table bought my our organization. The table was still boxed and unassembled but we expected to put it together and start playing within half an hour or one hour tops. However, it finally took us almost four hours to put it together. Maybe it was that we had too many engineers or it could be the lack of instructions. In any case, none of this deterred us as we tried our best impression of a ping pong table. Thankfully Wesley dropped by and after going online made us a copy of the instructions. With this help, our tale of hubris and misguided effort came to an end and we finally were able to play.

Workshop: Andrew Gouldstone and how to focus your presentations

This Friday the 16th we had the previously announced workshop on how to focus our presentations. This workshop was hosted by the ASM-LI Student Chapter and Materials Science Club and it starred Prof. Andrew Gouldstone from our Materials Science Department. The event was a success with attendance not only from the graduate body but it also hosted undergraduate students from the Engineering Science program. We are thankful to all the students that attended this event and to those that made this event possible.

ASM-LI Chapter Meeting : Undergraduate Senior Design Presentations

During this month, the ASM-LI chapter meeting hosted the senior design presentations given by undergraduate students about their senior design projects. During the social hour at the beggining of the meeting we had the opportunity to view posters detailing the projects from many students. Later, during the dinner part of the meeting we listened to outstading PowerPoint presentations given by two of the design groups.

Materials Science & Technology 2005 Conference

During the month of september we had the very successful trip to Pittsburgh to attend the Materials Science & Technology 2005 Conference during the 24th-26th of September. The trip was possible thanks to a travel grant given by the local ASM-LI chapter and the van loaned from the engineering department. The previous picture was taken outside one of the halls of the conference. From left to right we have: Prasanna Thoguluva, Alfredo Valarezo, Xiaoting Jia, Alok Chauhan, Mozhgan Anjom, Jose Mawyin, Jose Colmenares, Prof. Andrew Gouldstone and Prof. Sanjey Sampath behind the group (not appearing and taking the picture we have Juan Zhou).
