It was a beautiful day and it was the day of reckoning. We were competing in the famous "Roth Race" against the most ruthless and competitive group of cardboard boat racers ever put together. We were confident of our paddling skill and on the fine construction of our ship, the “S.S Winging It”. The ship was a superb example of cardboard workmanship. It was constructed on the naval yards of the CTSR also known as the “High-Bay” by a team of senior designers. It was as tough as they could make it and it was built to last.
The “Winging It” had a seasoned crew with a "no holds barred" attitude:
Captain (Jose Mawyin)
Number 1 (Prof. Andrew Gouldstone)
Mr. Tim (Timothy Lee)
Councilor Silva (Maricris Silva)
The race was going to start. The landcrew and rowers were ready in their positions.
Captain: Today is the day folks. The department expects the outmost effort from all of us.
Mr. Tim: But I’m going to fall overboard.
Number 1: Nonsense Mr. Tim. You will do your best as usual.
Captain (whispering to Number 1): If need be, enforce discipline using the paddle to whack them in the head.
After a good start, we notice our ship veering to the right.
Councilor Silva: Captain, the Mallard is approaching from starboard.
Captain: What are their intentions Councilor Silva?
Councilor Silva: Their minds are hard to read and full of images of yellow ducks and “Quack” sounds but they are up to no good.
The Mallard was known across the seven seas. It was a monstrous construct of cardboard and yellow paint. Its crew were disciples of the Cult of the Duck, a ruthless mob of duck frenzied pirates. Its huge bulk was pulling us in and we had to do something.
Mr. Tim: We should ram them and then pull out full steam to the left!.
Captain: Make it so Number 1.
Number 1: Ramming speed Mr. Tim!!. Prepare for boarding, you never know what these Duck Cultists may try.
The ramming maneuver worked. After hand to hand combat with the Duck minions, we pulled ahead from its bulk. We thought that we had achieved victory. However, a sneaky two-person boat has pulled ahead of us during our battle with the Mallard.
Everyone (sad faces): We should have won that race.
Number 1: The Mallard delayed us. Next year we should build an Armada, defeat the Mallard and its Duck minions and rule the “Roth Race”
Captain: You are right Number 1. We will see you next year Mallard.

Thank you to all the students, staff and faculty that helped us along the way to make this event a reality. It was a great experience having the undergraduate and graduate students working together not only to built the boat but also to crew it and launch it. We trully hope to have more joint events like this.
During the race we were happily surprised by the amount of people from our department that came to give us their support. Thank you for coming!.
