Stony Brook University was established in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of mathematics and science; the first campus was located at Oyster Bay, Long Island, on the grounds of a former Gold Coast estate. In 1962, a new campus was built in Stony Brook, on land donated by local philanthropist Ward Melville. Part of the State University of New York system, Stony Brook now encompasses 123 buildings on 1,100 acres. In the nearly fifty years since its founding, the University has grown tremendously, and is now recognized as one of the nation’s important centers of learning and scholarship—carrying out the mandate given by the State Board of Regents in 1960 to become a university that would "stand with the finest in the country."

紐約州立大學—石溪分校隸屬於紐約州立大學系統〈State University of New York，簡稱SUNY〉，創校於西元1957年。紐約州立大學系統共有30多個分校，除了石溪分校之外，還有水牛城〈Buffalo〉、阿爾巴尼〈Albany〉、賓翰頓〈Binghamton〉等知名度較高的分校。石溪分校原址位於長島的牡蠣灣〈Oyster Bay〉，在1957年初成立時是為了培養紐約州當地中學數理師資而成立，也因此，該校的數理與資訊科系在全美的排名還不錯。

1962年，石溪分校接受紐約州著名慈善家Ward Melville的捐地，遷址至石溪鎮。現在的石溪分校佔地1,200畝；而在校就讀的學生約有1萬9千位，教員1,682人；每年石溪分校接手的政府暨企業支助約6億元，大多用在資訊設備與教學媒體的更新。

石溪分校目前提供有119個大學部學程，102個碩士學程與40個博士學程；而大學部的學生約佔全校學生人數的62%〈73,572人〉，碩士30%〈35,708人〉，博士5%〈6,111人〉。根據校方資料，石溪分校的博士班學成在全美排名第40，而其中又有兩個排名前十。

根據校方的統計，石溪分校的大學部學生白人裔〈Caucasian〉佔所有學生數的35%，亞裔〈Asian Origin〉佔23%，國際學生〈International〉佔4%；研究所方面，白人裔佔58%，亞裔佔6%，國際學生佔19%。

石溪鎮 Stony Brook

石溪鎮的建立追溯至西元1940年。當時紐約州著名的慈善家Ward Melville希望能夠依照自己的理想建造出一個符合人性化的生活環境，於是便到處募款來建地。光是Melville個人便捐獻了50萬美金來打造石溪鎮的市容，而今天石溪鎮上古樸卻又井井有條的建築特色，都得歸功於前人的遠見。

石溪正雖然是一個小鄉鎮，卻因為與紐約、長島等大都市鄰近而得以鬧中取靜。石溪與紐約與長島約只有1.5小時的車程，而紐約州立大學石溪分校的學生在課餘或者週末時刻都會選擇到大城市去狂歡。
