Upon entering theater 216, Visual Interpretation of the Arts, I was not sure what to expect from the class nor what exactly would be required from me in order to succeed. After the first few classes I had a better understanding of what I would be expected to accomplish, but my nerves, about using new programs and technology I had yet to be exposed to, had not subsided. For our first project we were required to make use of the program Adobe Photoshop, this was personally my first time working with this program. Our task was to use at least three original photographs recently taken and create a collage. I decided to create an abstract bar scene in the park. I took photographs of trees, the sky, grasslands, my friends in the bar and I took photos of birds off of google. I then extracted the photos down to what I needed in my collage using a blank page I created a sky by coloring the page blue. I then pasted my extracted pieces of photographs on top of the sky, and then used various touch up tools form Adobe Photoshop to finalize my collage. For the second project we were instructed to take original photographs surrounding a specific theme and create a slide show using iPhoto. I decided to create a newspaper slide show using current events. I used the song Better Days by GoGo Dolls and had the articles progress from negatively themed to positively themed, and ended the slide show on a positive note. This was my first time using iPhoto, and I felt I learned a lot and it was very successful. I also used Photoshop again to edit some of my pictures, the second time around using Photoshop I felt much more comfortable and feel like I made a lot of progress from when I began my collage. For the third project we were instructed to create a movie using iMovie. I fell that this was the most difficult and time consuming task, but also the most rewarding. We were required to come up with a movie Idea, videotape, direct, and edit the video. I decided to film a documentary starring my family about careers and how careers affect “life” in general. For me this was a very heart touching topic, because at this point in my life I am trying to decide on a career and life direction, interviewing my family provided me with a lot of insight about how I should personally pursue my life goals. For our fourth and final project we were instructed to create a website. The website will hold all our previous work from the semester. When I first heard that we were going to create our own website I was slightly frightened, but after a few days working on it and watching it beginning to take shape I became excited. Overall, I believe this class has given me a lot of knowledge, which I had yet to be exposed to throughout my college career. It was so different than the “main stream” classes I have previously taken. I learned much more about art and technology then I expected to and as I reflect on the past semester I fell as if my knowledge about media and technology has grown exponentially!
