"Perseverance is a positive, active characteristic. It is not idly, passively waiting and hoping for some good thing to happen. It gives us hope by helping us realize that the righteous suffer no failure except in giving up and no longer trying. We must never give up, regardless of temptations, frustrations, disappointments, or discouragements."

************************************

I chose to take this class because I wanted to learn more about photoshop and using the computer for media projects of my own. A friend took the class in a previous sememster and recommended it. I felt challenged by the projects because I had some trouble thinking of creative ideas and did not have knowledge of what I could potentially do with these programs. I have grown to appreciate them and I strongly believe that more people should take advantage of this class especially if they are not art or theater majors.

New media is incorporated in many fields yet I had never put much thought into it before. I had the opportunity to see how images could be manipulated to deceive others which makes me less likely to play into some tricks on the internet. I was also able to learn how to put pictures together to create a storyline and even add music to create a certain mood. I realized through this class, that it is very easy to edit and create my own movies which I had always wondered about but never took the time to learn. Now, I can appreciate new media in a new light and adapt the skills from what I have learned into my daily life. For example, I often hold campus events through my organization and realized that my movie editing skills could come in handy after recording them. I also often need to make flyers for these events and Photoshop seems to be one of the best programs to use for these projects. New media is everywhere whether everyone takes the time to pay attention to it or not. It is constantly changing and becoming more modern and resourceful. I learned more than expected in this class and recommend it to all.

COLLAGE:

"Fairytale"

My collage was not originally titled but I gave it the name "Fairytale" afterwards. The thought behind this project was to create a realistic fake. The three images involved are the wallaby, background in Roth Quad and a photo of a friend, Zuhal. Visually I wanted the end project to make Zuhal look glamorous in a sort of wonderland. I was inspired by Cinderella and the idea of being in a fairytale so I thought brighting the "forest" would make it look more imaginary but I still wanted it to look as if she were really there along with the wallaby. Prior to this class I never worked with Photoshop or any graphic applications. I found it to be a challenging assignment and had to really put my imagination to the test. With a little more trial and error, I probably could have come up with a stronger concept.

SLIDESHOW:

"Spooky In Stony Brook"

Using my friend Zuhal, once again, I decided to make a slideshow based on campus activities and friendly visitor, Casper. I came up with the idea because I realized that I had many photos of my friends and I doing uncommon and strange things. It also helped that Zuhal is very animated and takes alot of pictures with a variety of facial expressions. The story was meant to depict Casper meeting a group of Stony Brook students who had been scared of him at first but then became friendly towards him. Unfortunately the story did not end smoothly and it was not clear how the change came about. Still new to using photoshop and iPhoto, I had a difficult time piecing it all together. If I had to do something over, I would have made sure I started as early as possible because I ran into a few issues with saving and compressing the files and lost my original project.

MOVIE:

"Stony Brook Wild 'N Out"

My DVD project is based on a campus event that my organization, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., did on campus in collaboration with MALIK Fraternity Inc. We hosted a show called "Stony Brook Wild 'N Out" based on the version by Nick Cannon and is also similar to the show "Whose Line is it Anyway?". It consisted of a few games editted to flow without too many pauses. The show took about an hour and a half and was cut down to fit into the 10 minute limit for this project. I feel as if this was my best project and I enjoyed working on it. Although I am satisfied with the end result, I would probably have made a better video with smoother transitions and funnier content but I was limited to the participants in the show. I also could have interviewed participants about their experiences but I felt that it would have been very long given the 10 minute cut-off. Overall, the skills I learned for this project seem to have been the more useful for the future because I like to record and always wanted to learn how to edit out parts of my recordings.
