My name is Christina Hagedorn and I am currently a sophomore studying at Stony Brook University. During this semester, THR 216 has presented me with many opportunities to grow as a creator and as an individual. Given that my concentrations are in Italian Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature and Linguistics, I am not often given the opportunity to use any sort of artistic imagination or creativity as far as images are concerned. During this class we created three works, consisting of a digital video, a short film, and a poster used for advertisement purposes. Initially, I was quite nervous about the whole plan--Me? I mean, I'm fine when you hand me a literary work in another language, but quite frankly, I'd rather sit up in my attic translating Aramaic for three days than to be forced to draw, say, a portrait. Of stick figures. I've always felt as though I've lacked any sort of artistic ability whatsoever, however, I slowly but surely learned that artistic ablity that is--skill, is completely different than creativity. Through this course I've learned to embrace the creative edge that I believe exists within each and every human being, regardless of age, race, or gender. Through the first project, the advertisement poster, I was able to convey ideas and elements for which I have great passion--travel and Italian culture and language with whomever comes in contact with my poster. In the slideshow, I was able to convey beliefs of mine regarding gender roles and equality in various social situations. While working on the Digital Video, I was able to convey emotion and express my opinions quite cearly concerning the current circumstances of New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina. Overall, working for this course has been a thoroughly rewarding experience.
