Carrie Hubbard Davis was 22 when she sailed in 1876. She crossed the sound many times over the next five years, doing business at various ports. She sailed on the Jacob S. Ellis, with her father Captain William Hubbard and her husband, Charlie, the mate. Her family lived in Orient where her mother, Jane Culver Hubbard, worked as a seamstress and midwife. Sometimes her mother would accompany the family on their sails, to go shopping in Norwich, Conneticut.
