  Causes: Bullying

The goal for all schools should be to reduce any existing bully problems, prevent new problems and create an overall positive environment in which all students feel safe.

Some suggestions:

  Bullying is listed as the number one cause of all incidents of school violence. In 2001, the U.S. Secret Service produced a study that revealed that bullying turned out to be a factor in two-thirds of 37 school shooting incidents. According to the agency, the attackers in those cases all felt they had been persecuted, bullied, threatened, attacked, or injured by others.

All of these well known people were bullied at school: PHIL COLLINS (singer), HARRISON FORD (actor), TOM CRUISE (actor), MICHELLE PFEIFFER (actor), FRANK BRUNO (boxer), AARON SPELLING (producer), and BOY GEORGE (singer). For some the bullying went on for years; for others it was less frequent. All of them feel that bullying is wrong and that it was not their fault, but the fault of the bully who was looking for a victim.

  1. THE MYTH: Bullies suffer from insecurity and low self-esteem. They pick on others to make themselves feel more important.
THE RESEARCH: Most bullies have average or above-average self-esteem. They "suffer" from aggressive temperaments, a lack of empathy, and poor parenting.
