How to Dye Hair

            If you want to switch up your hair color, heading to salon may cost you much money.  Dye hair at home could be a good way to save money and time. You will be able to learn how to dye your hair at home by following the next steps.


In order to dye hair at home, you will need the following tools:

·         Dye and Developer

Pick a color you like. If you are new, it is best to stick to a hair dye that is no more than two shades darker or lighter than your own natural hair color. The developer generally comes with the dye box. There are instructions regarding how to mix the dye with developer in the dye box. Choose a 20% developer if you need to purchase your own developer.

·         A Bowl

Prepare a glass or ceramic bowl to mix dye.

·         Towels

Prepare two or three towels that are ok to stain.

Tips: Lay the towels on somewhere it is easy to reach and away from hair dye avoid accidentally dye splattering.

·         Button-down shirt

Wear a button-down t-shirt can avoid damaging clothes. Also, it is convenient to wash and rinse out your hair.

·         Vaseline or Lotion

Apply Vaseline or lotion around the ears and hairline to prevent staining of the skin.

·         Gloves

Prepare a pair of well-fitting gloves to prevent staining.

·         Timer

Help you to set time for how long you need to leave the dye in your hair.

·         Wide-tooth Brush or Comb

Prepare a wide-tooth brush or comb to help you smooth the dye.

·         Plastic Clips

Prepare some plastic clips to help you hold your hair and keep track of the area you're working on.

·         Shower Cap

The Shower cap enables you to leave the bathroom during the setting period without worrying about dripping dye all over the house.

·         Alcohol Wipes

Prepare some alcohol wipes to clean the stain on your skin in case of splitting dye.



1.      Wash your hair one day before dying

The reason for doing this is because the natural oils in your hair allow the dye to bind to your hair more easily.

Tips: It is better to avoid conditioner when you wash your hair the day before dyeing it.


2.      Wear a button-down t-shirt

Tips: It would be a good idea to put a towel around your shoulder to prevent from stain.


3.      Put lotion on your hair line

Apply lotion around your ear and through your hairline to protect your skin from the dye.


4.      Put on your gloves

It is very important to put on your gloves. You do not want your hands are stained with dye.


5.      Use the bowl to mix the dye with developer

Follow the directions on the dye bottle you brought to combine certain amount dye with the developer according to the length of your hair.


Dyeing Your Hair

1.      Use a comb to separate your hair into different sections

Use plastic clips to hold the separate hair sections apart. The number of sections depends on the amount of your hair. Usually, we separate into four sections separating from the middle and then dividing into two parts from center on each side.


2.      Apply the dye

Divide each section of hair up into smaller three or four subsections and color each subsection individually. Use the brush to dispense the dye onto your hair. Use your gloved fingers to gently run color from roots to ends. Repeat on each section. Start applying dye about 1 inch from your roots for who first time dyeing hair. Start applying dye about ½ inches from your roots if you have experienced.



1. Make sure to do a color test before starting dye your hair if you are not sure about the color you choose.

2. Don’t take too much hair at once because the inside hair may not get colored.


3.      Set a timer

There are instructions on the box for how long you need to leave the dye in your hair. Follow the directions and set the timer. Stay the dye on and wait until the process time is up.


Tips: Make sure to leave the dye in your hair between the minimum time and the maximum time. You can leave the dye in for the maximum amount of time if you have a lot of white hair. 


Rinsing and Styling Your Hair

1.      Wash Your Hair

Rinse your hair until the process time is up to. After your time is up, rinse your hair out until the water runs clear.


2.      Use color protection shampoo and color protection conditioner

Use color protection shampoo to wash your hair. After you have shampooed your hair, apply the color protection conditioner and rub it thoroughly into all of your hair.


Tips: The color is damaging your hair so we need the conditioner to give your hair extra care.


3.      Dry your hair

You can either let it air dry or blow dry your hair on medium heat. Now you would show off your new hair color.
