The Constitution

Name

The name of the Society shall be the Economics Society.

Objective

  1. To confer distinction for high scholastic achievement in economics
  2. To stimulate and promote student interests in all aspects of economics
  3. To publish an official journal pertaining to the focus of society and topics of economics
  4. To sponsor the Fisher-Taussig Award Competition

Membership

  1. Membership in the Society shall include undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, alumni, and honorary members.
  2. Membership is open to all those who are eligible without regard to gender, race, complexion, creed, national origin, or orientation.

Provisional Membership

Participants in the society who have not yet met the requirement to obtain full membership are recognized as having provisional membership. Provisional members can participate in all activity of the Society, as would a full member; however, preference is given to full members.

Undergraduate Membership

Undergraduate membership shall embody those who are pursuing the study of economics as one of their major interests. The minimum qualifications for undergraduate membership are the following:

  1. The candidate must have junior standing or higher at the time of induction. Student must have a residency of at least one semester.
  2. The candidate must have twelve (12) semester hours of economics courses with an average grade of at least a B (3.0/4.0) in these courses.
  3. The candidate must have a general cumulative Grade Point Average of at least a B (3.0/4.0) and a class ranking in the upper one-third.

Graduate Membership

Graduate membership shall embody graduate students who are pursuing the study of economics and graduate students who were inducted as undergraduates.

  1. The candidate must have residency of at least one semester with a major or minor in economics.
  2. The candidate must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of B (3.0/4.0) or better and a class ranking in the upper one-third.

Faculty Membership

The Society may elect members of the faculty or administration to membership. They act as faculty advisors of the Society.

Alumni Membership

Alumni membership shall consist of persons who have qualified for all of the standards for regular undergraduate or graduate membership; however, could not induct as students because of extenuating reasons.

Honorary Membership

Honorary membership may be granted by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the Society's membership, subjected to the approval of the Executive Board.

Officers of the Executive Board

  1. The Executive Board of the Society shall consist of the following positions held by elective officers:
    • One (1) President
    • One (1) Vice President
    • One (1) Secretary
    • One (1) Treasurer
  2. The Executive Board of the Society shall also consist of the following positions held by either appointees of the Board or elective officers:
    • One or more (1+) Events Coordinators
    • One (1) Head Tutor of the Economics Learning Center
    • One (1) Editor-in-Chief for the Economic Review
  3. The terms of office for all positions shall be one year.

Duties of Officers

President

The President of the Society shall preside over all meetings of the Society. The President shall act as the chairperson of the board and overseer of all program committees. These duties include but are not limited to conducting all meetings of the Society, making recommendations periodically that are to the benefit of the Society, reporting on the position of the Society at Executive Board Meetings and General Body Meetings, and conducting treasury transactions in the absence of the Treasurer.

The President is also the officer who is the head student administrator of the local chapter of the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society. Any board meetings are to be called by the president, and further the President should address any issue that may come up immediately. The President is also in charge of contacting the various organization or institution to request for an event that may later be addressed to the Events coordinator to finish up. As a head of the honors society, a president's most important role is to be a role model for the rest of the student body.

Vice President

The Vice President, second in command will schedule meetings and event dates and directly assists the President for all matters in such ways as may be deemed proper. In the absence of the President, the Vice President shall fulfill the duties of the President.

Secretary

The Secretary shall keep and preserve all records and archives of the Society. The secretary shall record all bylaws, ordinances, motions, resolutions, and proceedings of the Executive Board Meetings and General Body Meetings. The secretary shall keep an accurate registry of full members and officers of the Society. In addition, the accurate progressions of membership points of provisional members should also be kept.

Treasurer

The Treasurer shall collect and preserve all funds apportioned or donated to the Society and allocating expenditure in accordance with the provisions of the Society's constitution and bylaws. The treasurer shall keep accurate books of the account and related documentations such as purchase orders, invoices, and receipts. Upon request, the treasurer has to furnish the Executive Board with a statement of the receipts and disbursements. The books and accounts shall be journalized and audited under the direction of the Executive Board.

Events Coordinators

Events Coordinators, also known as Program Chairperson, are in charge of the scheduling and planning of all events and programs in the Society. The Events Coordinators are also responsible for advertising of upcoming events. They are responsible for monitoring weekly progress of all projects. They shall present the status of preparations for events during the Executive Board Meetings. They are responsible for supplementing the Society with events as necessary to provide members adequate and sufficient opportunities to satisfy and complete their membership requirements.

If necessary, additional board members can be assigned to assist the events coordinators. These people would constitute the Program Committee; however, no more than two extra members are required. Event Coordinators shall be the overseer of all Program Committees formed.

Editor-in-Chief

The Editor-in-Chief will be directly in charge of the Society journal, the Economic Review. The Editor-in-Chief if possible, shall publish an issue of the journal within the second month of the start of each semester. The Editor-in-Chief shall keep members informed of the Society's activities and reflect the purpose of the Society as stated in the preamble of the constitution.

The Editor-in-Chief has to make sure that enough articles and contents are available to publish the journal. Moreover, that the contents of the article meet the professional and scholarly standard. This may include copy-editing, correcting, and verifying the content of the submitted articles. The Editor-in-Chief also has the duty of requesting articles submission from members. Editor-in-Chief shall also understand the publish techniques necessary for the creation of the Economic Review.

Head Tutor

The Head Tutor will be in charge of the Economics Learning Center (ELC). The role is not limited just selecting tutors, but also scheduling tutor office hours according to convenient times. Furthermore, the responsibility of Head Tutor also includes keeping track of tutor's efforts and awarding the tutors with appropriate membership points. It's the head tutors responsibility to submit the information regarding the tutors' membership points to the secretary before the semester ends.

The Journal

  1. The Economics Society shall maintain the publication of a journal that reports matters related to the Society and topics of general economic interest. The name of the journal shall be the Economic Review.
  2. There shall be an Editorial Committee charged with the function of approving material in the inclusion in the Economic Review. The Editorial Committee shall be comprised of the Editor-in-Chief and other editors designated by the Editor-in-Chief or appointed by the Executive Board.

Dissolution:

In the event of the dissolution of this club, all USG funds and assets of this organization shall revert to the USG.
