I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at Stony Brook University. My research focuses mainly on the mass media and political persuasion. In my dissertation, I explore how emotionally evocative political advertisements influence political behavior and information processing.

In addition to my dissertation, I am also working on several projects examining the role of emotions in political communications. For instance, in a collaborative project with Leonie Huddy, Stanley Feldman, Erin Cassese, and Mary-Kate Lizotte, we are exploring the role of anxiety in the acquisition of political information. In a simple experiment, we test whether anxiety evoked in a short news clip facilitates or inhibits learning.

I am also interested in political methodology, with a focus on measurement. In an ongoing project with Stanley Feldman, we are assessing the consequences of Differential Item Functioning in public opinion research. This problem has rarely been confronted in survey research and we show that DIF has implications for conclusions drawn regarding the distribution of beliefs in the mass public.http://ws.cc.stonybrook.edu/polsci/http://ms.cc.sunysb.edu/~lhuddy/http://ms.cc.sunysb.edu/~stfeldma/http://www.sinc.sunysb.edu/Stu/ecassese/shapeimage_1_link_0shapeimage_1_link_1shapeimage_1_link_2shapeimage_1_link_3
